A major study published yesterday in Nature Nanotechnology suggests some forms of carbon nanotubes--long, straight multiwalled carbon nanotubes--could be as harmful as asbestos if inhaled in sufficient quantities.“This study is exactly the kind of strategic, highly focused research needed to ensure the safe and responsible development of nanotechnology,” says Andrew Maynard, Chief Science Advisor to the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies (PEN) and a co-author on the paper.
Multiwalled carbon nanotubes are already being used to provide lightweight structural support in a range of commercial products, including baseball bats, tennis rackets, bicycle frames, and automotive parts. Don't inhale those products!
